Frankenfoods: What Are GMOs?
Have you ever heard of the term “Frankenfoods”? It refers to foods that are genetically modified. Today, many genetically modified foods line grocery store shelves, the majority unlabeled. Unfortunately, scientists don’t know what the long-term consequences are of consuming these “foods.”
Let’s take a closer look at what GMOs are and how to avoid.
What Are GMOs?
Let’s start with a simple question. What are GMOs, and why should you be concerned about them? GMOs, or Frankenfoods, refer to genetically modified foods, whether derived from genetically engineered animals, plants, or an admixture of the two. Paul Lewis, a Professor of English at Boston College, first coined this term on June 16, 1992.
Lewis warned against the dangers of scientific experimentation within the context of the food chain, writing, “Ever since Mary Shelley’s baron rolled his improved human out of the lab, scientists have been bringing just such good things to life. If they want to sell us Frankenfood, perhaps it’s time to gather the villagers, light some torches and head to the castle.”
Frankenfoods to Avoid
What are the major culprits to watch out for when it comes to Frankenfoods? In the US, more than 95 percent of the sugar beet crop, 94 percent of the soy crop, and 88 percent of the corn crop are genetically modified. Where do most of these GMO ingredients end up? You guessed, processed foods.
While the verdict’s still out when it comes to some of the health implications associated with consuming GMOs, eating a whole, organic food diet has been shown in numerous studies to promote health and wellbeing. As a result, it makes sense to steer clear of artificial ingredients, chemicals, pesticides, and genetically modified ingredients.
